Ohio to Washington D.C. Part 2: Staying with our first Warm Showers host

Got to our Warm Showers host’s house in D.C. with no problems at all. Warm Showers (www.warmshowers.org) is an international website that connects touring cyclists with people who will host them for free during their tours. The idea is that the host provides a place to stay and a ‘warm shower.’ Craig and I have been Warm Showers hosts for years and we’ve hosted lots of people who were riding their bikes across the United States. We’ve really loved getting to know all these interesting people and sharing in their adventures.

This is the first time we’ve ever used Warm Showers to find a place to stay and our experience so far has been really positive. We started off looking for some place to keep our car during the two weeks we’ll be riding the trails. I sent out about 15 requests to Warm Showers hosting in the D.C. area and got about 10 replies back. Everyone was so friendly and most of them said that they’d be happy to let us leave our car at their house and that we could spend the night there too.

So here we are staying with David from the Arlington area. He fed us a great dinner and took us to REI so that I could buy some cycling gloves. Yes, I realized today that I forgot to bring those too. Whoops. Wonder what else I’ve forgotten.

D.C. is a cycling mecca with a huge network of bike trails and a very active cycling community. David’s house is only one block away from the Custis Trail which is a straight shot from Arlington to the very end of the C&O Canal Path. Perfect! He even took the day off work tomorrow so that he can ride along with us. Sweet!

We were in five states today: Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia. Maryland, and Virginia plus Washington D.C. In that order. And no it's not a mistake; we were in West Virginia twice. Notice that it is raining.
